“New World Order under the Trump Era – Crises or Opportunities for Taiwan?”

Within a month after his inauguration, U. S. President Donald Trump has questioned the relevance of the NATO alliance. He has fired verbal broadsides at Mexico and China. He has signed an order to withdraw the United States from the TPP. His National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has resigned after making misleading statements with Russian ambassador. Furthermore, Trump has vowed to reverse the U.S. trade imbalance by increasing exports and creating millions of new jobs as his priority.

It is now clear that this will be a very different presidency than the previous ones. Here at our SIPA 70 Forum, we would like to discuss some perspectives and issues arising from the new world order introduced by Mr. Trump, as well as their relevance to Taiwan. Our distinguished panelists will address the following issues:

  1. How will “America First” affect or shift US foreign policy? How will Trump's two separate phone calls with President Tsai and President Xi place cross-strait relations at risk and thereby influence political stability
  2. The U.S. foreign policy direction will not be determined by Trump alone, but will also require congressional approval. The President, Congress, the Judiciary and other agencies all play significant roles. Are we therefore expecting cooperation, or conflicts, on politics within the U.S. boundaries?
  3. Surprisingly, Trump’s presidency has boosted the capital markets. The Dow even hit a new record high. Numerous black swan events have reshaped the traditional investment strategies and index investing has become a new trend in global financial markets. Therefore, how can Taiwan utilize this strategy combined with the idea of sustainable investment to create more impacts in our society?
  4. With the explosion of cutting-edge social media usage around the world, traditional forms of media no longer dominates. How will this change the media landscape today? How will public opinion be affected in this contemporary era?
  5. In recent years, the world has been in turmoil. Certainties and conventional assumptions no longer serve in the midst of confusions. Is this phenomenon a crisis or an opportunity for Taiwan?
